A View of Retail Technology at the Turn of the Century

This is a fascinating look back into the history of retail technology at the turn of the century. In January 2000, I was the National Practice Manager of Microsoft’s first retail consulting practice. I joined Microsoft in June of 1999 as one of their first retail industry experts. I gave this presentation, my first at the company, to a room full of retail executives and Microsoft partners. They were skeptical of using our solutions for mission-critical applications. It was my job to convince them otherwise.

The Power of Passion

Music has always been my primary passion. Some of my earliest memories are sitting in my mother’s kitchen, banging on pots and pans with spoons and forks. Unlike technology, I didn’t stumble upon this passion. My infatuation with percussion is DNA infused, as is my “play by ear” instinctive ability. My desire to play was as natural and powerful as wanting to eat – and I couldn’t get enough of it. Without knowing it then, I’d discovered the Power of Passion.

Connected Retail Experiences

Retailers are focused on creating seamless experiences across their multiple shopping channels, but today’s digitally mature customer has created their own channel, determining what they want to listen to and how they want to interact with retailers. If retailers aren’t focused on the only channel that exists now – The Customer Channel – then they run the risk of becoming irrelevant.

The Consumerization of Information Technology

From NRF January 2010, David Gruehn talks about the impact of the Consumerization of IT in the retail industry, which is the phenomenon of consumers adopting technology faster than retailers’ ability to adapt which is revolutionizing the industry. He describes how this presents both threats and opportunities for the retail industry.
